Encino | Pedlow Skatepark

Pedlow Skatepark in Encino has a great, massive and roomy keyhole bowl, a large street course, a super tight, shallow snake run and some horseshoes in the street area. There is unfortunately no tree cover and subsequently no shade in the entire park so summer afternoons are brutal. It is near a school also so after 2PM, watch out for the flying groms.

Shot for National Lampoon. I do not remember the significance of the white wicker elephant but this guy had a nice layback air.

Connemara | Peat Bog

I normally do not shoot landscapes because I don’t care about landscapes and am horrible at creating them. Not that this is any great shot but I like this image because this particular peat bog in Connemara in western Ireland was a striking place. This was taken in late morning and the entire vista was empty and very still.

There is a dark mood in the image with the low, oppressive sky and the black waters of the bog. It was a beautiful morning there, with that threatening sky, the desolate landscape, and the still black waters.

Shot with a Nikon F5, 35-70mm Nikkor, Kodak Tri-X.

Met a bunch of shooters walking around town today. A Nikon shooter with a D40 and the great 50mm f1.4 lens. In Washington Square, there was a Leica M6 with an early version of the 50mm Summicron.

My gear was caked with snow early on today. Need to take better care when I’m out. But I never will. Use it or lose it.

Very few people out today, except at Pilgrim Hill which I guess is the only sledding game in town.

Hassan Hakmoun | Le Poisson Rouge

Hassan Hakmoun performed last week at that great space, Le Poisson Rouge in the Village. The occasion was the Global Music Double Fundraiser which raised funds for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Also performing that night were Falu, Basya Schechter (Pharaoh’s Daughter), Luqmon Brown (Funkface), Malika Zarra, Haale, Bill Bragin (DJ Set) and Amon Drum (DJ Set).

It was a great night of music. And if the guy with the mesh back shirt is included, a great night of dancing too.

Shot with a Nikon D300, 35-70mm Nikkor, 12-24mm Nikkor.

World Pillow Fight Day 2008 | Los Angeles

Someone pointed out to me the similarity between the Times Square snowball fight photos and the pillow fight photos I took almost two years ago in downtown Los Angeles.

It’s true, of course, and maybe a bit obvious, but revisiting these images, I really enjoy how each person’s expression is completely genuine and in the moment. There’s a military term for the combat soldier’s mental state of mind called the “dictatorship of the present”, where there are no thoughts of yesterday or tomorrow, only of what is immediately around you in the moment.

Bullets, snowballs, pillows. It just pays to be alert.

And yes, I did get hit in the face shooting the pillow fight.

South Africa | Charging Bull Elephant

posted by doug on 2009.12.31, under Nikon, dougKIM photography

I was working a gig in South Africa and was fortunate enough to spend about ten days in an absolutely decadent game lodge in the Kruger Concession, shooting game drives at least twice a day.

One lesson I learned was that young bull elephants are full of testosterone and are ready to charge at the least provocation. We were driving a trail in our open Land Rover and our guide, distracted while talking on the radio, drove past this young bull, hidden behind some brush. He immediately flared out his ears and charged us. As the bull was charging to within a couple dozen feet of our vehicle, I took this shot while the woman behind me said, “Why the fuck is she stopping?!?”

Deidre, our guide, had quickly brought the vehicle to a full stop. The only way to stop an elephant from charging is to stand your ground. The elephant pulled up at the last second, turned and walked away, no longer interested in us, even the woman next to me still cursing.

Engagement At The Met | Adam & Maria

posted by doug on 2009.12.29, under New York City, Nikon, dougKIM photography
29:

Because of the enormous attention I have received from the Times Square snowball fight photos, I was able to get back in touch with a couple that I met two years ago here in New York.

Sometime in December 2007, I had been shooting a corporate event at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Outside on the great stairs in the cold of winter, some guy was proposing to his girlfriend. I ran down the steps and took these shots and the strangers in front of the museum gathered around and applauded the couple.

Adam and Maria were married last year and used these images for the bridal shower and the wedding reception. Congratulations to you both.

How awesome is this city?
